Search guidelines

How to search the dictionary:

  1. Choose languages
The dictionary contains terms in English, German, Norwegian and Latin. Choose the index language "translate from" and the target language "translate to".

  2. Search alternatives
    There are three search alternatives:

    1. Show list of words that start with "search term"
This results in an automatic right-truncated search, giving a hit list with terms beginning with the entered search term.
For example: Entering "milk" results in a hit list containing "milk fat", "milker", "milking parlour", etc.

    2. Show list of words that contain "search term"
This results in an automatic left and right-truncated search, giving a hit list with terms including the entered search term.
For example: Entering "milk" results in a hit list containing "buttermilk", "milking parlour", "bucket milking system", etc.

    3. Exact search ("search term" only)
Non-truncated search, giving a hit list with terms exactly matching the entered search term.
For example: Entering "milk" results in a hit list containing "milk".

  3. Search term
    - The search term must contain at least two letters.
    - Searches are NOT case-sensitive.

    Searching for phrases
    - When searching for entire phrases (multiple words), the order of the entered words is important.
    - The % symbol can be used to substitute characters, words or phrases in a word or phrase.
    Examples::
    - Only the search term "zero tillage" results in a hit on "zero tillage", NOT "tillage zero".
    - Searching for "Agricultural % Norway" results in "Agricultural University of Norway".

Hit list
There is no maximum limit for number of hits, although only 15 hits are shown on the screen at a time. For German terms, gender is shown in parenthesis. By clicking on "more", the entire entry for the term is shown, including all translations of the term, comments, examples of usage, etc.
